Marion 8750 walking arm refurbishment
A dragline is one of the biggest machines on any mine. The Marion 8750 walks the floor on huge shoes driven by a propel system, and when that gear is worn or damaged, the whole machine stops earning. That is the kind of job ABC Heavy Engineering is built for.
What the job involved
The walking arm and propel gear case carry enormous load every time the dragline takes a step. Over years of service the gears, bearings and housings wear, and the only fix is a full refurbishment back to OEM specification.
Our crews worked at height on the dragline itself, in the open pit, to lift the propel gear case out and bring it back to a serviceable condition. Every component was cleaned, stripped, assessed, measured and recorded before any decision was made on repair, replacement or refurbishment. Nothing goes back in until it meets specification.
Why it stays in-house
The reason a job like this works is that the whole complex sits under one roof. The Paget workshop runs seven integrated departments, fabrication and specialised welding, slew bearings, induction hardening, machining, fitting, industrial painting and engineering. Work moves between them without leaving the site.
That matters on dragline components. A gear case might need machining on the floor borer, hard-surfacing in the weld bay, heat treatment, and final assembly in the fitting shop. Doing all of that in one place is faster, and it keeps the quality under our own control the whole way through.
Decades on draglines
Dragline work is not new ground for us. ABC has decades of experience repairing dragline components, sheaves, drums, walking frames, fairleads, boom points and gear cases, for the makes that work the Bowen Basin. It is the kind of knowledge you only get by doing the work, year after year, on real machines in real pits.
When a dragline goes down, the priority is simple: get it walking again. We repair all of it in-house, and we do it 24/7.
